In a Monday interview with Daily Caller, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) continued to bolster his chops as a social conservative, saying he would happily sign a bill preventing chemical castration of minors.
“I’m very much opposed to chemical castration of minors, I honestly didn’t know this existed until a few years ago,” DeSantis said during the interview. “That would be something I would sign for sure.”
“Chemical castration” is the shorthand term for the effects of hormone treatments used by boys to “transition” into girls. Those hormones are prescribed by doctors and have permanent side effects, and many conservatives argue that children should not be able to take them.
DeSantis also spoke about the recently-signed Fairness in Women’s Sports Act, which forces high school and college athletes to participate in athletics based on their sex at birth, not their gender identity.
“It’s discrimination against our women athletes to force them to participate against male athletes,” he told Daily Caller. “It needs to be a level playing field, and it needs to be fair, and it should all be based on biology, not based on ideology.”
He slammed “woke” corporations for opposing the new law.
Last weekend, DeSantis fired back at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) which is threatening to boycott the state of Florida. That is a risk the governor is willing to take.
“We won’t be cowed, we will stand strong,” DeSantis said. “I will choose to protect our young girls every day of the week and twice on Sunday.”
He reiterated that same message on social media.
“In Florida, we’re going to do what’s right and we won’t be cowed by pressure from woke corporations. They will not dictate the policies in Florida – not now, not ever. Florida will stand strong and protect women’s sports and opportunities,” he said on Twitter.
